For the last week of CommLab our assignment was to take an earlier project and improve it. I decided to work on the audio project I made with Paul Paradiso: Music for Public Restrooms. We were inspired by Brian Eno’s intention in making Music for Airports: namely, to make a rotten experience better. So, we brainstormed a little and agreed on a number of public restroom problems we thought might be improved by a little auditory assistance.

We wanted to create a clean and dry feeling room, not fetid and damp like so many New York restrooms, so we recorded ourselves crunching leaves in Washington Square Park (Washington Square Park is far from clean, but the air felt crisp and dry). We added some chimes that sounded cold and clear to us, too. One of our goals was to keep people from talking to us in the restroom, so we decided to make a track that was linguistically confusing. We copied several paragraphs of text in different languages from Project Gutenberg, shuffled the words, and recorded me reading it quietly. Finally, we wanted the track to feel like a narrative without actually telling a story, in order to allow for a little escapism, so we placed everything within a landscape with a stream.

This week I had some trouble with our Audacity files, so I started from scratch and laid all of our tracks within a new landscape, this time without the annoying duck that was in the first version.

I got my paper screen back from the AMS last Wednesday, and the laser cutting looks great. I also got multiple LED drivers daisy-chained together and lighting multiple LEDs. My code was starting to get unwieldy, though, so I met with Rory again to get some help organizing it. We ended up scrapping a bunch of code and rewriting it with separate functions to control the value of the parent lights (the LEDs that are lit first, based on the count of bracelet stretches) and to control the values of the child lights (the groups of LEDs that glow around each parent light). I also got the stretch sensor to function as a trigger, based on code I found on the Physical Computing site, and I created a counter to keep track of how many times the bracelet is tugged. I’m having a hard time integrating the parts of my sketch, however. I wanted to be finished coding by now and be well into assembling the display, but I’m hesitant to mess with my circuit, which is currently functional, until I have the all of the code working together. Farewell to the idea of a nice wooden frame to house the screen, and so long to randomizing the selection of the light families to ignite! I am jettisoning the plans I had for this project left and right. It’s frustrating to know that what I present on Thursday won’t look as finished as I want it too, but hopefully the guts will be solid enough that I can build on them for another iteration.

Update: The first prototype of Velas is working, including a switch to segue from collecting the tug count to displaying the lights. The selection of which light families to display still isn’t random, but hopefully I’ll be able to get that working for next week.

I finally have a draft of my design for laser cutting, and I have an appointment at the AMS on Wednesday. After digging around and failing to find wood that seemed appropriate for the project, I’ve decided to prototype the screen with heavy paper. I’m excited (and a little nervous) to see how it will look. The image below is just a small portion of the design.

Laser Cutting Preview

I also got the LED driver working the other day. Tomorrow evening I’ll be working on getting a group of LEDs to behave the way I’d like. Then I’ll work on getting multiple LED groups going.

I’ve been struggling with an appropriate input for this project, but earlier tonight I got an idea. I was walking through Chinatown, and I happened to notice a pile of wooden bead bracelets. I’m going to try threading beads on a stretch sensor and looping it like a bracelet so that each time the user tugs on the bracelet a light is triggered in the display.

Working on a such a personal project is pretty difficult, but it’s been totally worth it so far. After class the other day I was completely frustrated with my idea, convinced it was destined to be a failure, but a few of the comments I got in class were extremely helpful. Angela mentioned hearing the muezzin’s call to prayer from her apartment and thinking about how people can create their own individual private spaces for contemplation simply by performing simple rituals like rolling out their prayer carpets. Another thought from class has also been lingering, which is the idea that an actual structure seems like a burden. So, instead of building an actual structure, I’m going to try to create the same feeling of a defined, contemplative space by building a wall mounted light instead.

The basic concept for the project is still the same– part one is still a sensor that the user (someone who is grieving for someone who has died) carries with her throughout the day and activates whenever she feels a pang of grief for the departed (this part will be wired for the first prototype). Part two still receives the signal from part one and notes each instance of grief. But rather than a structure, part two is a wall mounted light behind a laser cut design of repeating patterns. The idea is that when the user returns home part two displays a small, bright light for each instance of grief that was noted by part one, centered in the circular parts of the laser cuts. In turn, each little light slowly dims while at the same time the area around it begins to glow with lots of smaller lights that show through finer laser cuts, ideally guiding the user through a process of letting go of those moments of grief. This weekend I’m figuring out what light sources to use (probably warm white leds), how to control their dimming/glowing, and sketching out the laser cut design. Here are a few sites that are providing some inspiration/reference:
